Matt’s Musings: Being and Doing
It recently came up in conversation that our congregation seems to emphasize “doing” over “being” when it comes to how we engage with our faith, perhaps even to the point that those who might prefer “being” would feel uncomfortable or unwelcome. When I first heard this, it gave me pause. I wasn’t sure how to respond. It’s taken me a little while to figure out why this distinction was so difficult for me. Read full newsletter
Insurrection Book Discussion: To believe is human. To doubt, divine
Our discussion of the book Insurrection, by Peter Rollins, has been a great success! As we look towards finishing our discussions, we’ve reached a diverging point. The group that meets at Smiley’s Pub on Tuesdays at 5:15pm will be finishing up the final two chapters on June 5 and 12. The Sunday morning group is currently on hold as our main participants are out of town for a few weeks. We’ll pick back up with Chapter 6 on Sunday mornings sometime in July. Read full newsletter

Matt’s Musings: Making Active Connections
We’ve talked a lot about hospitality and welcome over the last couple years. We’ve made great strides in being a welcoming congregation, including our week-to-week practices of showing warmth and care for visitors and adopting an identity-building statement of inclusion. Read full newsletter
Insurrection Book Discussion: To believe is human. To doubt, divine
Come and engage with the incendiary, inflammatory work of Peter Rollins' newest book, Insurrection, over the next few weeks. Rollins encourages readers to submit our spiritual practices, religious rituals, and dogmatic affirmations to the flames of fearless interrogation. By doing so, we might begin to see that Christianity is in the business of transforming our world rather than offering a way of interpreting or escaping it. Read full newsletter

Matt’s Musings: Believing, Experiencing, Being Transformed
Of all the stories of Jesus’ life, teaching, death, and resurrection, the miracles are often one of the most difficult to relate to and understand. They stand apart from our everyday experiences of how the world works. They seem to fly against logic and common sense. They’re beyond understanding, beyond explanation, beyond belief. Church Leadership Retreat Follow-ups
Our church leadership retreat on March 24th yielded several exciting new plans, particularly regarding how we care for, incorporate, and encourage children in our church’s ministry: We will immediately begin a search for a paid childcare worker for Sunday mornings. Matt’s Musings: My Big Question
Over the last few weeks I’ve worked with the worship team and with many of you on creating a series of "big questions" to explore during Lent. I’ll admit I was at least a little worried about what some of you might come up with - not because they might be heretical or challenging the status quo, but because they were likely to be some of the questions I struggle with myself. And, sure enough, that has turned out to be the case. Read full newsletter
